This project is an investigation into the U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan from 2004 until now as part of the Global War on Terror. Our point of departure is the theoretical concept of “New Wars” as described in the theories of Derek Gregory and Stephen Graham. The Concept of “New Wars” is analysed through the U.S drone-campaign in the region of FATA, Pakistan, which serves as the empirical foundation of the project. We extract four main tendencies of the “New Wars” theory in order to examine how they are applicable to the U.S. drone strikes in FATA. These four tendencies are: changes in technology used, new enemy definition, decreased importance of state sovereignty, and the blurring of the line between military and civil society. The project raises questions concerning drone-warfare, targeting policies, what constitutes terrorists, what is the nature of borders, and how the CIA can possibly conduct their own so-called “war” on foreign territory. One of the conclusions of this project is that although the “New Wars” theory can explain some of the aspects of the U.S. drone campaign in FATA there are still factors indicating that the newness in “New “Wars” can be questioned.
