Russia is currently the largest supplier of gas to the European market and this position has had consequences for Europe. This was seen with the pricing disputes between Russia and Ukraine which affected several nations in Europe. This thesis explores the ambitions and motivations in the Russian government in relations to its natural gas. Further a analysis of the Russian identity in the post-cold war era is conducted using concepts developed by Roger Kanet and Pavel Baev.
