Abstract

How do Simone De Beauvoir and Phyllis Schlafly describe marriage, and what role does the woman play in their respective conceptions of the ideal marriage? In this project the point of departure is taken in the opposing opinions of feminist philosopher Simone De Beauvoir and conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly on the subject of marriage and the ethics and morality within. With the help of critical analysis and skepticism, this project delves into opinions and arguments uttered by Schlafly and Beauvoir and a discussion on central aspects in marriage and the relationship within that context. After having analyzed and discussed the different points of view, we have learned that Simone De Beauvoir have very valid points on the subject of women being the sex who comes second in line, and how the conservative, traditional way of marriage in many ways can be ethically wrong and oppressive to women. On the other side we have the message of Schlafly, who boldly states that the natural order of things, economics, the well-being of children and the fate of America points to traditional marriage as the answer to all these societal problems.
