Abstract

The present thesis describes the synthesis and characterization of dendritic oligothiophenes (DOTs) consisting of linear oligothiophene building blocks which are alpha-beta-connected with each other. Two classes were synthesized via Suzuki cross-coupling reaction: DOTs comprising linear building blocks of the same alpha-conjugation length (alpha-terthiophene or alpha-quinquethiophene) and DOTs containing shorter linear building blocks in the core and longer ones in the periphery of the dendrimer. The optoelectronic properties were investigated giving further insight into the influence of the conjugation via the alpha-beta-linkages of the oligothiophene moieties on the behavior of these novel dendrimers. Furthermore, the DOTs were used as donors in solution processed bulk heterojunction solar cells.
