Abstract
This dissertation consists of three papers on the social and economic effects of migration. The first two analyze migration decisions and their effects on elderly parents who stay behind in the country of origin. The third paper estimates the returns to occupational foreign language use focusing on the difference between immigrants and non-migrants in the host country.
